One of the most common questions we get before a booking: “How long is this going to take?”
It is a fair question. You have a schedule. You need your car back. Here is a straightforward answer — and why mobile detailing actually gives you more of your day back.
Quick Answer: Car Detailing Time by Service Level
| Service | Typical Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic exterior wash | 30–60 minutes | Exterior only, no deep work |
| Full interior detail | 1.5–2.5 hours | Vacuum, wipe, condition, windows |
| Full interior + exterior | 2.5–4 hours | Complete detail, both surfaces |
| Essential Detail ($200–$300) | 3–4 hours | CarPlay’s full-service package |
| Transformation ($2,000–$5,000) | 1–2 days | Full interior + exterior + paint correction + ceramic |
These are realistic ranges — not marketing minimums. A thorough detail takes time. Detailers who promise a “complete detail in 45 minutes” are either rushing or skipping steps.
What Takes the Most Time
1. Interior cleaning
The interior is almost always the biggest time factor. A heavily soiled interior — crumbs in every crevice, stained seats, grimy door panels — can add an hour or more compared to a well-maintained one. Deep cleaning carpets and upholstery the right way means extraction, not just vacuuming.
2. Vehicle size
A compact sedan and a full-size Crew Cab F-250 are completely different jobs. Larger vehicles mean more surface area, more glass, more carpet, more everything. At CarPlay, pricing and time estimates are based on vehicle class for this reason.
3. Condition of the paint
A Transformation detail includes paint correction — removing swirl marks, light scratches, and oxidation before applying ceramic coating. Paint correction alone can take 4–8 hours depending on how much correction is needed. This is skilled work that cannot be rushed without compromising the result.
4. Add-on services
Paint sealant, engine bay cleaning, fabric protection, and odor treatment all add time. If you are booking a standard detail and adding services, plan for an extra 30–90 minutes depending on what you add.
Why Mobile Detailing Saves You Time Overall
This is where mobile detailing has a clear advantage over a traditional shop.
When you drop your car at a detail shop:
- Drive to the shop (15–30 minutes)
- Wait or arrange a ride
- Wait for your car
- Drive back to pick it up
When CarPlay comes to you:
- You stay at your home or office
- We work while you work, run errands, or rest
- You get your car back without a trip
The detailing itself takes the same amount of time either way. But mobile detailing returns 1–2 hours of your day that a shop visit would consume.
How Long for CarPlay’s Services Specifically
Essential Detail (3–4 hours)
Our full-service detail covers interior and exterior thoroughly. Most vehicles are done in 3–4 hours. We schedule accordingly — arrive in the morning, done before lunch. You can work from home, take calls, or simply relax while we handle your car.
Transformation (1–2 days)
The Transformation is a complete restoration: deep interior cleaning, full exterior decontamination, multi-stage paint correction, and professional-grade ceramic coating application. This is a precision process that cannot be rushed. Most Transformation bookings are scheduled over two half-days or one full day, depending on the vehicle’s condition and the level of paint correction required.
Ceramic coating also needs cure time after application — we will walk you through post-application care so the coating bonds properly and lasts for years.
Tips to Keep Your Appointment On Schedule
Be honest about your car’s condition. If the interior has not been touched in 12 months, let us know upfront. We would rather give you an accurate time and price estimate than surprise you mid-detail.
Clear personal items before we arrive. Detailers should not be moving your gym bag, car seats, or stacks of paperwork to get to the carpet. A quick clean-out before your appointment lets us start on the actual detailing work immediately.
Book the right service level. A basic wash will not fix deeply stained seats. If your car genuinely needs deep cleaning, booking the right service the first time is faster and cheaper than booking again for a second pass.
What Happens If It Takes Longer Than Expected
Sometimes a car is in worse condition than it looks from the outside. When that happens, we communicate before extending the work — we will not surprise you with extra charges. If additional time or services are needed, we discuss options and get your sign-off first.
